September 5, 2025The KennedyStrong Foundation and Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA Partner to Enhance Inclusive Programming for Youth
CONCORD, NC — June 6, 2025 — The KennedyStrong Foundation (KSF) is proud to announce a new partnership with the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA to introduce an inclusive after school initiative designed to support youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Cabarrus and Rowan counties. This collaboration aims to empower staff with the tools and training needed to better serve children of all abilities, fostering a more inclusive environment for all participants. At the conclusion of this engagement, the YMCA will actively promote its afterschool program with the goal of increasing the number of afterschool participants diagnosed with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
KSF has conducted an assessment to evaluate the current state of inclusivity and accessibility within the West Cabarrus YMCA’s afterschool program. The assessment focused on key indicators such as staff communication styles, emotional safety, support for belonging, active and cooperative learning, program structure, and family and community collaboration. These findings will help inform the development of a comprehensive plan for staff training, coaching, and program enhancement for children of all abilities.
“Our goal is to create environments where kids of all abilities feel valued, supported, and welcomed in our community and municipalities,” said Doug Deffenbaugh , Director of Programs at KSF. “Through this partnership, we aim to equip YMCA staff with the knowledge and skills to implement inclusive practices that benefit individuals with disabilities.”
Training sessions utilizing KSF’s proprietary modules: Levels of Inclusion and The Brain State Model, will be the next step in the program. KSF will provide ongoing support through direct modeling and coaching during on-site sessions. The pilot program will launch this fall at select YMCA branches, with plans to expand based on community feedback and outcomes.
The Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA, known for its commitment to youth development and community engagement, sees this partnership as a natural extension of its mission. “We are excited to collaborate with the KennedyStrong Foundation to enhance our afterschool programs,” said Brett Rockett, Executive Director at Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA | West Cabarrus Branch & Share the Harvest Community Farm. “Together, we can create more inclusive spaces that support all children in reaching their full potential and provide a safe, welcoming space for kids of all abilities.”
